In recognition of the need for primary care providers in Metropolitan Detroit's medically underserved areas, in 1995 nine area institutions formed the Greater Detroit Area Partnership for Training.
The Greater Detroit Area Partnership for Trainings (GDAPFT) mission is to:
Develop and implement a regional, technology-mediated, interdisciplinary educational program to prepare Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse Midwives and Physician Assistants for clinical practice within underserved areas.
GDAPFT candidates are recruited from medically underserved areas within Southeast Michigan and are designated as Partnership for Training Scholars. The first class of scholars was admitted in the fall of 1997. Partnership for Training Scholars are enrolled at one of the participating academic institutions and have the opportunity to participate in common, web-based courses developed through the Partnership.
The Partnership consists of the following institutions: |
Academic Partners: |
|
Employer Partners: |
Oakland University |
|
City of Detroit Health Department |
University of Detroit Mercy
(lead agency) |
|
Detroit Medical Center |
University of Michigan |
|
Henry Ford Health System |
Wayne State University |
|
St. John Health System |
|
|
Trinity Health |
In addition to the above institutions, many community and church partners have contributed to the shaping of the project by addressing strategies for student recruitment, program retention, and commitment to practice in their respective communities. Representatives from the community serve on the Governing Board and participate in committee meetings.
Through this interdisciplinary effort, scholars receive training at clinical sites chosen for their service to the underserved. The students find this experience invaluable as they become unique, culturally competent clinicians who are committed to the delivery of community oriented primary care in medically underserved areas.
